Obituary for Mary Margaret "Margie" Shober

LaVale, MD – Mary Margaret “Margie” Shober, LaVale, MD, passed away on Saturday, March 24, 2018.  She was 95 years old.  Margie was born in Baltimore, MD on September 14, 1922.  She was the only child of Arthur and Mary (Mansfield) Smith.

Margie was a graduate of Catholic Girls Central High School and the Allegany Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed as a registered nurse at Allegany Hospital, later named Sacred Heart Hospital, located on Decatur Street in Cumberland. Margie met her future husband while he was a patient in the hospital. Joseph Shober and Margie Smith were married on August 14, 1948, at St. Patrick’s Church in Cumberland.  They purchased their home in LaVale and raised their three children there.  As her children grew up, she returned to work in the medical office of Lewis Brings, M.D.  When Joe passed away in 2005, the couple had been married for 57 years.

Margie attended the Church of Saint Patrick from early childhood until her health began to fail.

Margie is survived by her daughter: Mary Ellen (Shober) Twigg and husband, Jim, LaVale; and her sons: Joseph Shober, Jr., Cresaptown; and Edward Shober and wife, Tami, LaVale. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Amy (Twigg) Rice and husband, Kevin; and their son: Carter, LaVale; Brian Shober and wife, Laurel and their son, Carson of Ohio; and Jennifer Herman and Scott and their children, Teesha, Derrick, Cody, and Logan; and their five grandchildren all of Montana.

Other survivors include sister-in-law and life-long best friend: Billie Shober, Cumberland; sisters-in-law: Phillis (Shober) Ryan, Ijamsville, MD; and Ginger (Shober) Smith of Delaware; many nieces and nephews; her constant companion Rascal, her cat, and good neighbors Althea, Jack, and Plexi.

Mom was a loving daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother who always put her family first. She was a dedicated nurse, a good neighbor and had many special long-time friends, some dating back to high school, and nursing school.

Our family would like to thank Mom’s caregivers Janet and Sandy. Their dedication and compassion made it possible for our mother to stay in her own home until her passing.

We ask that any remembrances be sent to the Allegany County Animal Shelter, 716 Furnace Street, Cumberland, MD 21502.

“Mom, you were always there for no matter what we needed. You were the perfect example of what a mother should be and you were probably the nicest and most kind person we will ever know in our lifetimes.  We feel so lucky to have had you in our lives.  We love you and we will miss you.”

A service will be held at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at Noon.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 11:00 a.m.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be her children, grandchildren and their spouses.
