Obituary for Charles Michael Dewey

Charles Michael Dewey, 63, resident of Cumberland, passed away unexpectedly on August 27, 2018.

“Chuck” was the son of Charles M. and Kathryn “Kay” (Moffit) Dewey, and was born on November 2, 1954 at the San Diego (California) Naval Hospital.

Charlie, he was known to family and close friends, is survived by daughter, Melissa; grandchildren Atticus, Hazel and Edith; mother, Kay; sister, Angela; brother, Jon; nieces, Leigh-Anne and Tina; and three maternal aunts and their families.

He was preceded in death by Jo Ann Kesson, his wife of 15 years, and his father Charles.

As a teenager, he played bass guitar in an award winning Battle of the Bands group “Ultimate Sounds” in Massachusetts. Following high school, he worked for General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, Connecticut as a certified Non-Destructive Welder building nuclear submarines for the Navy. In partnership with his wife, he operated computer sales and repair stores on the West Coast, Florida, and Cumberland. Following the death of this wife in 2006, he worked with FEMA in transportation, computer support and as a technical writer. He assisted during disaster missions including Hurricane Katrina and floods/mudslides in Texas and California. He was a quiet man known for his quest for knowledge, quick wit, and humor. He pursued interests in technical fields, amateur radio, and gun-smithing. In 2015, he relocated from California to live with his mother in Cumberland. He enjoyed cooking and became their gourmet chef. Charlie was proud of his parents, both Navy military veterans and their life work accomplishments, as well as his Dewey heritage. He was the 11th generation and last Charles M. Dewey in his family lineage of Thomas the Settler, from Kent, England.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on September 22, 2018 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 16 Washington Street, Cumberland, with the Reverend Martha McGill presiding.
