Obituary for Emma Lee (Radcliffe) Armstrong

Rawlings, MD – Emma Lee (Radcliffe) Armstrong, 87, of Rawlings, MD, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2018, at home in the presence of her family. She was in the hospital for much of the last three weeks and had endured Alzheimer’s for over three years.  Yet, she enjoyed life until the end.

Born in LaVale, MD on September 15, 1930, Mrs. Armstrong was the daughter of the late Robert Lee and Bessie (Layton) Radcliffe. Her brother, Joseph Radcliffe and his wife, Dot, predeceased her in 2014.  Emma Lee was the last survivor of her immediate family.

A 1948 graduate of Allegany High School, Emma Lee was employed in the office at the Kelly Springfield Tire Company for seven years. Married in 1956 to Air Force pilot Charles W. "Bill" Armstrong, she followed her husband to various assignments in the US as well as three years spent at RAF Lakenheath in England. Emma Lee enjoyed the travel and new locations and was the dutiful wife and mother during her husband's Air Force career.  Her first son was born at Luke AFB, AZ and the second son while overseas in England.  One year, while her husband was away on assignment in Vietnam, she raised their two sons on her own.  Throughout, no Mother was ever more loving, or more adored in return.  Following her husband's retirement after 23 years of service, the family relocated to the local area and lived on McMullen Highway on land formerly of Bill's father's dairy farm. During this time, she was for several years employed at the Christmas Comer in LaVale, operated by her sister-in-law, Dot Radcliffe.  While there, Emma Lee acquired a huge collection of Dickens' Village English homes and businesses.  For years, she proudly displayed many of these items every Christmas.

Survivors are her husband of 61 years, Lt. Col. Bill Armstrong, USAF, Retired; her sons: Dean K. Armstrong, Keyser, WV, and Mark D. Armstrong, California, MD; and four widowed sisters-in-law: Lucille Stair, Catherine Armstrong, Bettie Armstrong, and Martha Armstrong, all of the Rawlings, MD area. Also surviving are her nephew Robert Radcliffe, Grantsville, MD; and her niece, Carolyn Bellavance, Montrose, CO; as well as numerous nieces and nephews from the Armstrong family also survive.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, on Monday, Monday, May 7, 2018, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at 11:00 A.M., with Reverend Merle Carroll and Reverend Patrick Buhrman officiating.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Maryland Chapter, 1830 York Road, Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093.
