Obituary for Virginia Arbutus (Rice) Luznar

Hollywood, MD-Virginia Arbutus (Rice) Luznar, passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2018, at Medstar St. Mary’s Hospital just 16 days short of her 102nd birthday.

Born May 5, 1916 in Cumberland, MD, she was the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Rice and Cornelia Belle (Twigg) Rice. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John J. Luznar, and son, Eddie; as well as a brother: W. Lester Rice; a sister, Catharine Sabastian, and special companions, Oscar Hilly and Everett Wampler.

After high school, Virginia worked at the Celanese Fibers Corporation of America and the Murphy’s five and dime store in Cumberland.  After moving to Southern Maryland, where she has lived for many years, she worked as a civilian servant for the US Navy.  Virginia was a realtor for O’Brien Realty, having served St. Mary’s county and other southern Maryland areas for many years.  She was a member of the Hollywood United Methodist Church, in Hollywood, Maryland.

She certainly did love living, fishing, & crabbing on the waters of the Patuxent River and made the finest crab cakes, and potato salad ever! For her 100th birthday party, she simply requested her banner to read: “She was an inspiration to us all”, and the sweet smell of hot dogs roasting in the oven!

Virginia is survived by: her sister, Betty Wolfrey, Plantation, Florida; her sister-in-law, Clara Luznar; her nephews: Larry Elliott, and wife, Anita, Powhatan, VA, who have faithfully watched over her so dearly for many years; William Rice, and wife Bonnie, Pocomoke, MD; and Paul Rice, Cumberland MD; her nieces:  Dixie Kellum, and husband, Tom, Cumberland, VA; and Joyce Emerick and husband Glenn, Flintstone, MD;  her great-nieces Alisha Elliott and Lynnette Gordon; great-nephews, Josh Elliott, and Bill Rice, as well as great-great nephews, Chad and Sam.

A graveside service & interment will be conducted on Monday, April 23, 2018 at 11:00 AM, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Cumberland, MD., with Pastor Don Harrelson, presiding.

A very special and heartfelt thanks to Elizabeth (Cecilia) Wright, and her other caretakers for taking such wonderful care of Aunt Virginia…you are so very special and appreciated.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 1050 East Industrial Boulevard, Suite #3, Cumberland, MD 21502.
