Obituary for George Herbert Leith, Jr.

George Herbert Leith, Jr.Cumberland, MD – George Herbert Leith, Jr., 70, of Cumberland, MD, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Home. 

Born June 12, 1947, in Cumberland, MD, Mr. Leith was the son of the late George Herbert Leith and Annie (Stevenson) Leith. He was also preceded in death by his wife: Ginny Leith.   

A graduate of Fort Hill High School, Class of 1965, Herb also graduated from Frostburg State University, Class of 1975, retiring from the State of Maryland Juvenile Justice Department in 2008 as an instructor. He was a United States Naval Veteran having served onboard the USS America during the Vietnam War and was previously employed at the Kelly-Springfield Tire and Rubber Company from October 1968, until its closing.  He was a member of the Queen City Lodge #131 A.F.&A.M. and the Scottish Rite receiving his 40-year Service Award.  Herb was a life-member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #172 and a life-member and Past Commander for the Henry Hart Post #1411 V.F.W. having served two terms.  He was also a member of the Goodfellowship Club.   

Herb is survived by his children: Martha Ann Leith, Cumberland, MD; Michael Leith and wife, Valerie, Chaneysville, PA: and Shannon Martz and husband, Chad, Cumberland, MD. He also leaves behind his brother: James R. Leith and wife, Janice, Cumberland, MD; his grandchildren: Micah, Jonah, Eli, Ellie, Rory, Casey, and Silas; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. 

A committal service will be conducted at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at 11:00 A.M., with Reverend Janice Leith and Pastor Kirk McTaggart officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Fort Hill Scholarship Fund, 500 Greenway Avenue, Cumberland, MD 21502; or, Greenway Avenue Stadium Capital Improvement Fund, c/o: the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce, 24 Frederick Street, Cumberland, MD 21502.
