Obituary for June Hopkins Brinsfield

Columbus, OH - June Hopkins Brinsfield, 91, previously a long-time resident of Cumberland, Maryland, died on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at the Wesley Glen Retirement Community in Columbus, Ohio.

While June had long called Cumberland her home since 1954, she spent her childhood in Bel Air, Maryland, born to Mark Oliver Hopkins and Janet (Scarff) Hopkins. June graduated from Bel Air High School in the Class of 1943. She also attended college at Mary Washington College and later at Allegany Community College.

For 64 years, June was a devoted wife to her late husband, Carlton Brinsfield. They met when Carlton rented a room in her family’s home, while he was serving nearby in a military facility during World War II. They shared a love for horseback riding which created the backdrop for the beginning of an enduring loving relationship. She supported Carlton through his military service, through his years in a busy medical practice to his last days dealing with the struggles of Parkinson’s Disease.

As a dedicated mother and avid volunteer, she served in many ways and these two roles often overlapped. She helped with Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts. Her involvement with the American Field Service led to the family hosting Ana Maria Marques de los Santos of Spain and Tor Erik Sand of Norway – two foreign exchange students who attended Fort Hill High School for a year. She loved working with the Western Maryland 4H Club and all things equestrian. In addition, she participated in many ministries at her home church, Centre Street United Methodist Church and also served in the Women’s Auxiliary to the Medical Association.

June was survived by her four children, Leigh Wigton and her husband Charles of Worthington, Ohio; Eric Brinsfield and his wife Cathy of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Brian Brinsfield and his wife Charlotte of Cumberland; and Joyce Brinsfield of Versailles, Kentucky. She was also blessed to have six grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Friends will be received at Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, on Monday, October 15, 2018, 9:00 to 11:00 A.M., with a funeral service at 11:00 A.M., Pastor Matt Wigton officiating.

Interment will be at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to aid in the fight against Parkinson’s Disease or to assist Western Maryland 4-H Club.
