Obituary for James Tiley Williams

Corriganville, MD – MSgt. James Tiley Williams, USAF, Retired, 84, of Corriganville, MD, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2018, at home.

Born October 4, 1934, in Eckhart Mines, MD, Mr. Williams was the son of the late John Evan and Regina (Groter) Williams. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia (Spataro) Williams; his sisters: Anna Williams, Hulda Sutherland, and Elizabeth Riley; and two brothers: Joseph Williams and John Williams, Jr.

Jim attended Saint Michael’s School and graduate from LaSalle High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force.  He served at Nellis AFB, Nevada; San Antonio, TX, Zweibrucken and Frankfurt Germany, Vietnam, Loring AFB Maine, NSA at Fort Meade, MD, and the Pentagon.  After a distinguished military career, Jim retired with over 20 years of service attaining the rank of Master Sergeant.

Jim followed his military career with 22 years of employment at Allegany College in Data Processing. He also taught at Allegany College and received his own Associate Degree as well.

Jim held lifetime memberships in the Vietnam Veterans of America, VFW, American Legion, AMVETS, DAV, TREA, and Air Force Sergeant’s Association.  Jim was a volunteer at the VA Cumberland Based Outpatient Clinic.

Jim was fondly known as the “the man at the wall,” in the iconic painting, “Reflections,” by Lee Teter. He was the artist’s model depicting a pained veteran at the Vietnam Memorial “The Wall.”

His daughters will remember him as the cherished father who has always been there for them.  Jim filled a void for his girls, who, at a tender age, dealt with the untimely death of their mother.

His friends and fellow Vietnam veterans respect him for his dedication and the strong bonds and friendships they shared. He touched many lives in the VVA Color Guard as the member who presented the flag to many families of deceased veterans at military funerals.  He was known for his patriotism and his love of country and his devotion to the veterans who served.

Surviving are his wife, Laura (Green) Williams; and his daughters: Regina “Geni” Newell (David), Bowie, MD; Loretta “Lori” Kline (Gary), Eckhart, MD; Joanne “Joni” Parham (Jamie), Chester, VA; and Elizabeth “Libi” Williams-Ziler, Cumberland, MD. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.  Jim is also survived by his stepsons: Jesse Broadwater (Kathy); Lucas Broadwater (Brittany); and Joshua Broadwater (Janaina); and his faithful friend: Chip Sours, who was like a son.
