Obituary for Dennis "Denny" Lynn Powell

Ridgeley, WV – Dennis “Denny” Lynn Powell, 67, of Ridgeley, WV, passed away Saturday, February 2, 2019, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. 

Born May 8, 1951, in Cumberland, MD, Mr. Powell was the son of the late Walter Benjamin Powell and Helen Mildred (Peer) Powell. He was also preceded in death by a son: Todd William Powell; two brothers: Walter R., and Bennie Powell; an infant sister: Jeannie Powell; and his father-in-law: Butch Long. 

A graduate of Ridgeley High School, Class of 1969, Denny also attended the Mineral County Vocational Technical Center. He was a United States Army Veteran with the 408 Military Police Detachment stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, MO, from 1971-1973.  He retired from Westvaco.  He was a member of the Multiple Myeloma patient Study and the Ridgeley American Legion Post #136. Denny was a man who loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, riding his 4-wheeler, and plowing snow with it.  Denny enjoyed mowing the lawn, or just sitting on the Patio playing with his dog, Buddy.  He was a man of many talents.  Friends, family, co-workers would always call on him to fix about anything that needed fixing.  If he did not how to fix something, he would rely of Google or You Tube for the solution.  Denny always believed that hard work earned you the greatest reward and worked hard his entire life. 

Denny is survived by the love of his life of 49 years: Georgia Lee Powell married on May 23, 1970. He also leaves behind his sister: Virginia Clark and husband, Frank; his brothers: Paul Leroy Powell and wife, Ann; and George Douglas Powell and wife, Tammy.  Denny is also survived by his sisters-in-law: Carol Powell and Bonnie Lou Powell; his mother-in-law: Midge Long; his brother-in-law: Henry Long and wife, Sue; his sister-in-law: Shelby Morgart; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and one great-great nephew. 

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, on Saturday, February 9, 2019, from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.

A memorial service will follow at 12:00 Noon with Reverend Scott Knowlton officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Rosenbaum Family House, Post Office Box #8228, Thirty Family House Drive, Morgantown, WV 26506. 

A special thank you to Dr. Blanche Mavromatis, Dr. Alida Podrumar, the Staff at the Schwab Family Cancer Center, Dr. Michael Craig at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, at WVU in Morgantown, WV, for the care and compassion given to Denny.

Denny’s last act of kindness was donating his body to the WV Human Gift Registry, Morgantown, WV.
