Obituary for Mark Fredric Baker

Cumberland, MD – Mark Fredric Baker, 71, of Cumberland, MD, passed away Monday, August 13, 2018, at his home. 

Born October 2, 1946, in Cumberland, MD, Mark was the son of the late Francis Tweedie and Aretta Sue (Swayne) Warhaft.  He was also preceded in death by his adoptive father, Paul Baker, and stepdad Abraham Warhaft. 

A graduate of Allegany High School, Mark attended Carnegie Mellon and studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. Mark starred in many major roles in a long theatrical career such as Linus in “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown,” which played at the White House, and received the Theatre World Award and a Tony Nomination for the title role in Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide” on Broadway.  Later, Mark garnered the Helen Hayes Award for his part in the International Tour of the musical “Grand Hotel.” Besides many other theatre credits, Mark appeared in several films and television shows. As Raggedy Andy in the animated film “Raggedy Ann & Andy,” the song he sang was awarded a Grammy. In recent decades, Mark was instrumental in bringing back the Embassy Theatre in Cumberland as a venue for the performing arts, providing countless opportunities for performers of all ages.   

Mark was a trooper to the end and, despite his developing illness, he was recently seen at the Embassy in a two-man show, “The Mystery of Irma Vep.” He was also a playwright and an avid visual artist of drawing, painting, and sculpture. 

Mark is survived by his brother, Dana Baker and wife, Barbara; his nephew, Geoffrey A. Baker; his niece, Amanda L. Corcoran; and longtime friend, Jerard Puckett. He also leaves behind his uncle, Sam Swayne and wife, Paula; his aunt, E. Louise Martinson; as well as numerous cousins and countless friends. 

A memorial service will be conducted at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, on Friday, August 17, 2018, at 1:00 P.M., with Reverend Dr. Marsha Spain Bell officiating.  Friends will be received one hour prior to the service. 

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens immediately following the memorial, and friends are invited to gather at the Embassy Theatre afterwards.
