Obituary for James "Jim" Lee Poland

Cumberland, MD – James “Jim” Lee Poland, 89, of Cumberland, MD, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017, at Cumberland Health Care Center. 

Born August 27, 1928, in Pierce, WV, Mr. Poland was the son of the late Arthur L. Poland and Thelma (Painter) Poland. He was also preceded in death by his sister: Betty Jean Poland Moore; his second wife: June Holler Poland; his daughter-in-law: Helen Chaney; his son: Jimmy Lee Poland; his granddaughter: Summer Alyssa McKenzie (Poland); and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. 

Jim was a United States Naval and Army Veteran and retired from Potomac Valley TV, Cumberland, MD. HE was a member of the East Gate Lodge #216 A.F.&A.M., the Masons, and the Ali Ghan Shrine Club serving on the Ali Ghan Director Staff.  Jim proudly drove children to the Shriners’ Hospital for their appointments.  He was also a member of the Fort Cumberland Post #13 American Legion, the Outdoor Club, the Good Fellowship Club, and the South End Rod and Gun Club. 

Jim is survived by his daughter: Betty Jean Poland Blake and husband, Simon, Columbus, OH; and his son: Robert Dale Poland and wife, Rhonda, Cresaptown, MD. He also leaves behind his stepdaughters: Diane Harris and Sandy Owens, both of Cumberland, MD; his grandchildren: Jennifer and Ryan Blake, Columbus, OH; Jesse Poland and Madison Poland, both of Frostburg, MD; Rhett Poland, stationed in the United States Army at Fort Riley, KS and Ashley “Noodles” Riddle, Cresaptown, MD.  Jim is also survived by his nephew: Gary Moore; his cousins: Susan and Jerry Shanks; his very special friends: Mary Ellsworth, LaVale, MD, and Rosalie McIntyre, Cumberland, MD. 

Jim donated his body to the Maryland State Anatomy Board in an effort to help others. Per his requests, there will be no services. 

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Ali Ghan Transportation Fund, c/o: Ali Ghan Temple, Post Office Box #1416, Cumberland, MD 21501-1416, to transport families and their children to the Shriners’ Hospital.
