Obituary for Elmer Leroy Keefer, Jr.

Cumberland, MD - Elmer Leroy Keefer Jr., 88 of Cumberland, MD, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, June 4, 2018.

Born March 13, 1930, in Cumberland, MD, Mr. Keefer was the son of the late Elmer L. Keefer, Sr., and Christena M. (Twigg) Keefer. Elmer was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Elmer was a 1948 graduate of Fort Hill High School. After graduating, he worked at the Department of Agriculture in Washington D.C.  After moving back to Cumberland, Elmer worked for the Crystal Laundry Company as a route supervisor for several years.  This was his favorite job, he once said, because he enjoyed meeting and talking with customers.  In later years, Elmer worked as a Parts and Warranty Manager for several local car dealerships.

Elmer was a lifelong member of Central Assembly of God Church. There he held many roles such as, Sunday School Superintendent, Music Director and Teacher.  He enjoyed singing, especially old-time hymns and often sang solos during church and for weddings.

Elmer and his wife, Loretta, joined the Upper Potomac Valley Kennel Club in 1972. They bred and raised Boston Terriers for many years, often selling them around the country.  Elmer held the Office of Club Treasurer for 38 years.  He served on the Show Committee at all the Club’s Annual Dog Shows.  Elmer was presented a “Member of the Year” plaque for his outstanding contributions to purebred dogs and services to the community.  Elmer also received an “Above and Beyond” award by the club.  He loved watching football and rooted for the Fort Hill Sentinels and Pittsburgh Steelers.  He was a kind and gentle man who was passionate about his family and enjoyed sharing family stories.

Surviving is his loving wife of 59 years: Hilda Loretta (Steele) Keefer, Cumberland; three children: Mark T. Keefer; Michele R. (Keefer) Crowe and husband, John, Ridgeley, WV; Dean B. Keefer and wife, Karen, Oakland, MD; and two grandchildren: Lauren N. and Katelyn E. Keefer, Oakland, MD.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, on Friday, June 8, 2018, from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M., and from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at 10:30 A.M., with Pastor Doug Seaman officiating.

Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park.
