Obituary for Clifton Jackson Cook

Cumberland, MD – Clifton Jackson Cook, 93, of Cumberland, MD, passed on Wednesday, December 20, 2017, at the Lions Center for Rehabilitation and Extended Care. 

Born July 26, 1924, in Ridgeley, WV, Mr. Cook was the son of the late Charles Carter Cook and Amanda Jane (Lloyd) Cook-Sherman. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 65-1/2 years: Maxine Cleo Cook, July 17, 2009; an infant son: Allen Clifton Cook; and a brother: Paul Cook. 

Clifton graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1943 then entered the United States Army serving in the 2nd Battalion, Company D, 1303 Engineers Regiment in General George S. Patton’s 3rd Army during World War II. He received battle stars for five campaigns including Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland, and Central Europe.  After serving in Europe, he was shipped with other troops from Marseilles, France, to Manila in the Philippine Islands.  He then served in the Army of Occupation in Japan.  Clifton was a member of the former Kingsley United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years and served as President of the Men’s Bible Class.  He was later a member of Center Street United Methodist.  He was a former member of the Cumberland Fire Department and retired after 30 years at PPG Works #7 in Cumberland.  Clifton was a member of the Scottish Rite since 1948 and attained 32nd degree in the Masonic Order.  He was also a member of the Ali Ghan Shrine since 1985 in the Legion of Honor.  Clifton enjoyed spending time with his great-grandson, Brandon, who was a great help to him in later years.  Clifton and Maxine enjoyed traveling together to Myrtle Beach, SC, to Florida, Hawaii, and with his son’s family to Europe and The Holy Land.  In recent years, Clifton enjoyed the company of a special friend, Betty Rice, Potomac Park, and her family, Sandy, Linda, Mary and Mike, Patricia and Larry who all treated him very well.   

Clifton is survived by his son: Gary W. Cook and wife, Karen, Daytona Beach Shores, FL; along with his daughter: Janice M. Cornachia and husband, Stephen, Cumberland, MD. He also leaves behind his half-brother: Burney Sherman and wife, Deanne, Chandler, AZ; along with his grandchildren: Dawn (Cornachia) Hartung and husband, Barry, Fort Ashby, WV; Kimberly (Cook) Mosey and spouse, Sean, Waterford, MI; Krista (Cook) Upthegrove and spouse, Kevin, St Augustine, FL; and Kevin Cook and spouse, Aliya, Mesa, AZ.  Clifton also leaves behind his great-grandchildren: Brandon Jackson, Brynne Hartung, Alexandra Hartung, Jacob Mosey, Samantha Mosey, Fischer Mosey, Emma Upthegrove, Owen Upthegrove, Jackson Cook, and Helen Cook.   

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, on Tuesday, December 26, 2017, from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., and from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. The Queen City Lodge #131 will hold a service at 7:30 p.m.  

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at 11:00 A.M., with Reverend Tom Young officiating and Brother Barry N. Hartung assisting. 

Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park. 

Military Honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard. 

The family would like to thank the Lions Center for their care of Clifton during these last months.
